Coastal Clean-up Initiative
As part of the Environmental Management Plan, YWPC and its partners conduct quarterly coastal clean-ups to protect Taiwan’s coastline.
In December 2023, and as part of the Environmental Management Plan, YWPC has established the quarterly Coastal Clean-up Initiative, which will also remain actively implemented during the Operations & Maintenance (O&M) phase. In collaboration with the National Taiwan Ocean University (NTOU) and local communities, coastal clean-ups have been conducted quarterly in the vicinity and around the substations in Taixi and Sihu. The teams hereby utilise International Coastal Clean-up (ICC) data forms to meticulously document the types and quantities of collected waste.
This initiative not only underlines the dedication to environmental protection, but also exemplifies meaningful local community engagement w.r.t. environmental conservation. Between Q4 2023 and Q4 2024, five (5) clean-up events took place, involving a total of 95 participants, including 21 local residents.
These efforts have led to the collection of 3,698 pieces of waste—primarily plastic, which made up nearly 70% of the total collected waste. Notably, the data collection over time revealed a remarkable increase in waste quantities during the third quarter of 2024, which marked the peak of the 2024 typhoon season. Outside of this period, a significant decline in waste accumulation has highlighted the positive impact of consistent coastal clean-up.
Looking ahead, the Coastal Clean-up Initiative, which forms an integral part of the Environmental Management Plan, will remain a key focus and be part of YWPC’s sustainability efforts. Through continued collaboration with local communities and academic partners, the initiative strengthens coastal protection while fostering environmental awareness and stewardship.
